Some cars are bought, some are built and on very rare occasions some cars like this Defender 90 were never actually meant to exist!
On paper, it’s a 1997 Land Rover Defender 90, but in reality, it’s something altogether more special. Powered by a 3.9-litre V8 EFI producing approximately 255bhp, this is no agricultural farm truck. It burbles, it pops, it crackles and it absolutely refuses to go anywhere unnoticed.
The idea first occurred when Jordan, the Defender owner, was working for Seat Surgeons, a specialist car interior company. Regularly visiting the likes of Bespoke, Overfinch and Twisted meant that the seed had well and truly been planted for Jordan. As is often the case with any petrolhead, the innocent thought of “I quite fancy one of these” quickly snowballed!
This particular build started life when the chassis on Jordan’s old Land Rover was beginning to need the usual patchwork of welding repairs. Rather than simply patch it up again, a brand-new galvanised chassis was sourced. The original plan? Swap the body over and carry on. The reality? It became a full rebuild and piece by piece, panel by panel, this Defender was reborn.
It was only when the project was nearly finished that the realisation hit… this wasn’t just a refreshed old Land Rover, it was an entirely new vehicle that technically didn’t have an identity. A donor logbook from a broken vehicle was eventually sourced to give it a registration, but the end result is something far removed from a standard ’97 Defender.
Under the skin, the 90 sits lower thanks to a TMD 2-inch lowering kit paired with Koni Red shocks, uprated poly bushes and beefed-up anti-roll bars. It handles far more sharply than most would expect from a Defender, while still retaining that unmistakable Land Rover character. There’s protection underneath in the form of an alloy sump and fuel tank guards, while 18-inch Sawtooth alloys fill the arches perfectly. As for the exterior, it’s been treated to KBX front grilles and light surrounds, LED lighting all round, Optimill hinges and Uproar 4×4 details including the top, side grilles and rock sliders. The interior however is a far cry from utilitarian with heated Recaro Sportster seats sat alongside a leather-trimmed Puma dash, matching doors and roof lining, carbon fibre centre console and rear forward-facing seats. It’s heavily modified yes, but still unmistakably a Defender.
Then there’s the party piece to this Defender… the noise, it’s certainly Jordan’s favourite thing about the car! The full stainless exhaust system gives the V8 a soundtrack that turns heads everywhere it goes. It’s the kind of noise that draws a crowd, often followed by the inevitable question “what’s in that?”. It’s already made an impression at events like Sports Car on the Park, where it gathered plenty of attention and it’s a familiar sight at The Motorist, where it’s always happy to steal a bit of the limelight.
Despite the love poured into it, the future for this Defender is bittersweet. After becoming foster parents to two brothers, Jordan and Nicky have unfortunately outgrown the Defender. As much as they’ve enjoyed every moment of the build and the ownership experience, it’s time for something larger and perhaps another project. After all, once you’ve built one Defender from the ground up, it’s hard not to start thinking about the next project.
This Defender may wear a 1997 registration, but in truth it never really existed in the first place. It’s part restoration, part reinvention, and entirely personal to Jordan. It’s a V8-powered Land Rover built not just to drive, but to be enjoyed… and enjoyed it certainly has been!
